Who We Are
|
SCFM (standard cubic feet per minute) was co-founded by Steve Miller and Jose’ Cosa in 1993
1993-2000
The company was founded primarily because the 2 co-founders wanted to approach gas compression in a very methodical way to better meet the needs of each client and their specific requirements.
Steve and Jose’ met while working for Ingersoll-Rand in the early 80’s and spent the balance of their time there working on the development of the oil-flooded single screw rotary compressor for natural gas service. The application of the screw compressor was particularly suited for fuel gas boosters in the Co-gen arena as well as in Landfill gas.
The early years of the company saw much activity in the Landfill industry where the bulk of SCFM’s business was generated. The processing and treating of these gas streams demanded solutions to very difficult and challenging conditions.
Operating on a consulting/engineering platform, compressor packages were designed in house, but the fabrication and assembly were outsourced. In early 2000, a building was purchased and SCFM brought fabrication and assembly in house.
Also during that period the landfill industry was impacted by a lack of government subsidies and that segment of the business subsided.
2000-2009
The waning of the landfill market gave way to finding a niche in challenging and complex projects which were more sensitive to SCFM’s value proposition of low total cost of ownership and high long term ROI for those companies that valued creative designs to achieve a solution with financial upside. This allowed SCFM to continue to diversify across the oil and gas market and to develop a more complete approach to gas compression and treating projects in other industries such as refinery and petrochemical utilizing their competence in rotary screw and process reciprocating compressor packages.
To date, SCFM has provided start from scratch designs and compression solutions using engine and motor driven blowers, screws, and reciprocating compressors for fuel gas boosting, low pressure gas gathering, compressor stations, hydrogen processing, and CO2 compression for Enhanced Oil Recovery.
Current
Today, the company seeks to engage clients on a consulting basis, executing on the recommendations provided with engineering and design, fabrication and assembly, and parts and service support, continuing a long tradition of “tailor-made solutions." Our experience shows an understanding and competence in complex, difficult and challenging gas conditions.
The company has a very diverse 18 year history, defined by our desire to meet client needs and a passion for technical excellence in providing gas compression and treating solutions.
Co-founders Steve Miller and Jose Cosa formed SCFM over 18 years ago in Tulsa, Oklahoma. From the outset – and based on their engineering experience in organizations of various sizes and capabilities in the industry -- the vision for SCFM was:
- To be a learning and thinking organization;
- To be nimble and responsive;
- To grow in depth and scope with each new challenge, offering disciplined, quality solutions to complex gas compression and treatment challenges.
That vision can best be described by this statement:
“Clients, competitors and suppliers acknowledge that SCFM is a recognized and respected provider of compression services.”
We pursue and fulfill this vision by leading our clients – on a daily basis – to successful solutions.
Our activities are guided by a set of core values and expectations described first and foremost by an old proverb that teaches: “listen first, then answer”. Our other guiding principles are described in the acrostic, “SERVICE TO OTHERS.”
You will appreciate your experience with SCFM. Furthermore, we will provide you a successful solution with lasting value, and exhibit a desire for a long and mutually rewarding relationship. -- Jay Stephens, CEO
“It was a pleasure working with you and the whole SCFM group on our last Compression project. From the quotation through the start-up, SCFM has been outstanding. The unit was built and delivered on time with minimal changes or additional costs. Throughout the project communication has been excellent. The start-up was one of the smoothest we have seen. SCFM played an important role in the success of this project, being both on-time and on budget.” – Bruce King, Cabot Oil & Gas
The owners and employees of SCFM are very concerned about investing into the Tulsa area communities with their energies, time, and money. Listed below are a few of the ongoing outreach efforts we have been involved with.
2011 A Taste of Tulsa - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma

A Tulsa tradition for 27 years, “a Taste of Tulsa” is an elegant event
where more than 800 guests enjoy the evening featuring food from more
than forty five of the area’s finest restaurants, silent and live auctions, a
wine pull and live music and dancing. All proceeds from this event support their vision of
successful mentoring relationships for all children who need and want them,
contributing to brighter futures, better schools and stronger communities for all.
SCFM will be donating two custom metal sculptures to the 2011 A Taste of Tulsa, benefiting the Big Brothers - Big Sisters. Staff from several departments worked together to come up with the idea and design and then executed the plans by calling on the craftsmanship of our shop technicians. It is a way to combine the skill of our employees, and our pride in our company and our industry, all of which are richly and historically linked with the city of Tulsa. The Skyline of Tulsa has been reproduced by using metal tubing, nuts, bolts and connectors to create a one-of-a-kind representation of our cityscape.
The Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma
… is one of the largest private, non-profit hunger relief organizations in the state. Located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Food Bank distributes donated food and other grocery items to 450 Partner Programs in 24 counties of Eastern Oklahoma. These programs include food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, after school programs and senior citizen centers. In turn, those programs collectively feed 60,000 people each week, the equivalent of 800,000 meals per month. In Fiscal Year 2009, the Food Bank distributed more than 9.5 million pounds of food.
In addition, the Food Bank helps raise public awareness about hunger and the role of food banking in alleviating hunger. Every day hungry Oklahomans are being fed as a result of the Food Bank’s efforts to fight hunger, feed hope.
In the summer of 2010, the Food Bank was fortunate enough to receive 60 truckloads of food to be boxed and distributed to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) eligible families in Eastern Oklahoma. This project required massive volunteer support throughout the summer. SCFM employees responded to the call for help by donating their time in the Food Bank’s warehouse, boxing food and household products for families in need. This fall SCFM employees also volunteered time at the Food Bank to help prepare and sort food as the Holiday Season approached. Donated food is sorted and repackaged prior to being distributed to their other Partner Programs.
SCFM Employees assist with holiday preparation. The Spring MS Walk
This spring nearly 3,800 Oklahomans came together at five Walk MS sites to raise funds and celebrate the MS movement. An amazing $360,000 has already been raised so far this year to help provide critical programs and services for those affected by MS. The Tulsa walk is a beautiful 3 mile walk, roll or stroll starting at Temple Israel and winding through historic Tulsa neighborhoods.
Team SCFM consisted of employees, friends, and family to walk in honor and support of friends and family with MS. Team SCFM has raised nearly $7,000 since we've started particpating four years ago. Thanks to all who supported and donated to help make this a successfule fundraiser for MS.
Operation School Bell and Caring Center of Tulsa
In late August, SCFM was presented with an opportunity to provide 650 pairs of jeans to children and women in the community in need of clothing. The following two organizations were identified as partners for this outreach: Operation School Bell and the First Baptist of Tulsa Caring Center ministry. Both organizations assisted us with the distribution of jeans.
Operation School Bell, through the Assistance League of Tulsa, serves more than 1,800 students a year through 89 elementary schools in 13 school districts in the Tulsa area. They provide new clothing including jeans, slacks, shorts, skirts, dresses, tops, shirts, underclothing, shoes, belts, sweater, jackets, gloves and each student selects one book and receives a hygiene kit. Operation School Bell also provides household items from their Bargain Resale outlet to children and families in need of emergency assistance.
Caring Center, a ministry of First Baptist of Tulsa is comprised of threevolunteer-based ministries: Clothing, Food and Benevolence. The Caring Center is located in downtown Tulsa and each year they see more than 25,000 client visits from people in need. Caring Center is a full-service pantry, clothing distribution center and homeless services facility. They were able to help locate children and families in need of the jeans and distributed them accordingly.
The MS 150 Fall Bike Ride
The MS 150 ride is an annual event in September that starts in Tulsa, OK and ends in Oklahoma City at the State Capitol. This 150 mile ride is a way to fundraise to help support finding the cure for MS. The first day's ride (approximately 75 miles) stops in Chandler, OK where the MS Society and donor provide dinner and entertainment while camps and tents are set up. The second day starts early the next morning and ends at the State Capitol in OKC. The 150 mile trip's intent is to encourage the entire state to join in this journey and battle to fight for a cure. The ride this year had about 700 bicyclists and many volunteers and sponsors in support.
MS means a lot to our company and co-workers and is viewed as a great organization to donate our time and money. Along with giving amazing support and gift to others in our community, it is also a great way to for our employees to build relationships outside of work and to come together as a team in different environments while putting our hearts and arms out there. Jose and Kayla rode the MS 150 in support and honor of family and friends who are living with MS.
SCFM Sponsors Kayla Davidson and team mate, Jose Cosa, EVP, take on the MS 150.
Kayla said, "The ride to me is the simplest way I can give back and help raise money to support and find a cure for this disease. I feel like I have the capability and drive to help others and what better way than to enjoy yourself and strive for a big achievement while doing so."
We were able to raise $1,965 and SCFM matched funds raised up to $3,000 - giving a total of $3,930 raised to the MS Society OK Chapter. Since Kayla had raised over $1,500 herself, she qualified as a top fundraising hero and was part of the Route 66 Club. Kayla mentioned this made it an even bigger accomplishment and honor to be able to give back! She mentioned there are also a large amount of SCMF employees that participate in the Tulsa MS Walk and SCFM raises a good $2,500 annually for this event too."
The Omega Foundation
SCFM attended the Omega Foundation Annual Banquet in October. This Foundation is supported by local Tulsa businesses, churches and organizations who have a heart to help minister to peoples physical and spiritual needs. Through children's homes, native evangelists and pastors, clinics, feeding the hungry and providing emergency aid they carry out that mission.
Mr. Jay Rittker, who was born and raised in Germany, had the desire to be in Christian Ministry. In 1997 Jay established the Omega Foundation, a Christian Humanitarian organization which is dedicated to helping people in underdeveloped countries. The heart of the foundation mission is to help CHILDREN. The foundation operates 3 children's homes located in both India and in the Philippines.
Some of the other projects that Omega assists with are feeding programs, distribution programs (food clothing and school supplies), medical aid, clean and safe drinking water, and in emergency relief when natural disasters like tsunamis, earthquakes and flooding from monsoons occur. Through these established outreaches, Omega and it's donors provide assistance in very practical ways.
On behalf of our employees and our clients, SCFM is able to support the following causes/organizations: | John 3:16 | Narconon Arrowhead | | First Baptist Caring Center | Susan Komen Cancer Foundation | | Mozambique Mission Project | Kharkov, Ukraine - Broken Arrow Church of Christ | | Boy Scouts of America | Camp Fire USA | | Little Light House School | World Changers | | The Gideon's International | Longtown Christian Church | | Cancer Services, Denver | Alternative Pregnancy Center, Denver | | OSU - Okmulgee | Emergency Infant Services |
